Australian actor Julian McMahon's cause of death has been revealed after he died aged 56 this week.

According to a cremation approval summary report obtained by US media outlets, the Australian actor died from lung metastasis as a result of head and neck metastatic cancer.

The report from Pinellas County Medical Examiner's Office in Florida said the cause of death was natural and he has since been cremated.

If cancer begins in another part of the body and spreads to the lungs, it is known as lung metastasis or metastatic cancer in the lung, the Australian Cancer Council writes on its website.

In a statement this week, McMahon's wife Kelly confirmed he had died after a "private battle with cancer" and did not reveal further detail.

"With an open heart, I wish to share with the world that my beloved husband, Julian McMahon, died peacefully this week after a valiant effort to overcome cancer," Kelly said in the statement.

"Julian loved life. He loved his family. He loved his friends. He loved his work, and he loved his fans. His deepest wish was to bring joy into as many lives as possible.

"We ask for support during this time to allow our family to grieve in privacy. And we wish for all of those to whom Julian brought joy, to continue to find joy in life. We are grateful for the memories."

The actor starred in shows such as Nip/Tuck, Charmed, FBI: Most Wanted, Hunters and The Residence — a Netflix miniseries released this year.

McMahon was also one of three children of former prime minister Sir William "Billy" McMahon and Lady Sonia McMahon.

Tributes from his former co-stars flowed on social media.

Actor Nicholas Cage said he was a "kind and intelligent man".

Rose McGowan, his co-star from Charmed, paid tribute to McMahon on social media.

"Oh Julian you force of brilliance, wild talent and humour, " she wrote in an Instagram story.

"For you, your family and loving fans all over the world, I pray [for] comfort."
