Behind Playlunch's cover of The Weather Girls' 'It's Raining Men' for Like A Version

Open up your lunchbox and see what you can trade with your friends, it's Playlunch time in the Like A Version studio.

The Naarm/Melbourne-based "bogan funk" septet came in swinging with their cover of The Weather Girls' 'It's Raining Men' – an outrageously goofy track that leans into Playlunch's vibe perfectly.

But they weren't here to muck around, the band kicked down the doors and delivered a very serious warning: this is an alarming weather event.

"It's so ridiculous and the original of course is full of all these moments that lean into that [novelty]," vocalist Liam Bell said.

"But I think for the same reason we liked the idea of treating it quite seriously and being like 'a hurricane is coming, this is the end-of-times, apocalypse-level weather event'."

For all their seriousness (or however serious a bunch of lads in singlets and sunnies can be), Playlunch recognised the musical prowess and genuine artistry beneath the cheesy lyrics and were determined to bring that to the front.

"It's just one of the best songs of all time," Liam said.

"I feel like it's goofy, it's kind of like a novelty song, but we really wanted to take an opportunity to show people just how badass the actual composition of this track is."

They might be called Playlunch but they have the gravity and impact of a full-strength Big Lunch with a free period afterwards.
