A senior Victorian police officer who was killed in a shooting at a rural property last month has been remembered at his funeral as an "adventurer and protector."

Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson was just days away from retirement when he and his colleague Vadim de Waart-Hottart were allegedly shot dead by self-proclaimed sovereign citizen Dezi Freeman.
